linpais FAQ

Here are the most Common FAQ we have come through so far, however you can suggest some additional ones by contact mail.

Q: WHERE DO I GET LINPAIS?
You can download an image (ISO) file at the Source Forge web site. Here is the URL.
Q: WHAT DO I DO WITH THE IMAGE I HAVE JUST DOWNLOADED?
You need to burn it on a DVD using software such as: ImgBurn if you use Windows or Brasero if use Ubuntu.
Q: HOW DO I RUN THE LIVE CD I HAVE JUST MADE FROM THE ISO FILE?
To run a live CD you need to follow a few easy steps: Restart your PC. Before your current OS loads get to the BIOS by pressing any of the following [DEL /F1/F2] according to your PC manufacture. Once on the BIOS screen (Blue screen with black and white Writing) switch tabs and go to [BOOT or BOOT MANAGER]. Here you will have a list of devices that can boot, you need to set the CD / DVD as a first Boot. After setting your first boot press F10 then hit enter, [save and exit]. You done, restart the PC, it will now boot from your CD / DVD drive. Use the same method to set the boot device back to HDD, [Hard drive]. Some computers will set the changes for 1 boot only, after they will reset the BIOS configuration to default [BOOT FROM HDD].
Q: Can I Save my sessions and data onto the live DVD?
You can run a full operative live DVD to either try the system or rescue your current OS, however, you cannot save data onto the live DVD.
Q: Where can I save my sessions and data without installing linpais onto my PC hdd?
You can save your session and data when running from USB live
Q: Where are the additional 3D games?
In order to reduce the large amount of GB needed to pre install all of the games, we have created an install script that runs directly from the desktop. Some games such as Torcs and Flight Gears are already installed as default, the rest can be installed by clicking on the install script. This option was taken when we realised that a full installation of all games would have taken almost 10GB in total. Of course we did not want to have such an enourmous distro tu run, additionaly it would have been impossible for average bandwidth users to download a file of this scale. The current version of linpais stands on less than 2GB.
Q: What haapens if I install the routine Ubuntu updates
Linpais is a distro made from Ubuntu and its core is deep linked with Ubuntu, all updates suggested from Ubuntu site are still running and suggested as for security and to better optimise your system
Q: What haapens if Ubuntu releases a new version?
Linpais will still run as normal, however, when a new version of Ubuntu will became available to the public, the update manager will offer to upgrade your system to the latest Ubuntu. You can still use Linpais without any changes and get the usual updates (as per Ubuntu 9.10), or you can upgrade your system to the latest Ubuntu. Please note that the online upgrade will overwrite your current system, thus your linpais will be overwriten by the new Ubuntu.
Q: Where can I get some new wallpapers?
Anywhere from ubuntu-art.org to linpais itself
Q: What are the minimum system requirements to run linpais?
Recommended minimum requirements Ubuntu should run reasonably well on a computer with the following minimum hardware specification. However, features such as visual effects may not run smoothly. 700 MHz x86 processor 384 MB of system memory (RAM) 8 GB of disk space Graphics card capable of 1024x768 resolution Sound card A network or Internet connection Note: All 64-bit (x86-64) PCs should be able to run Ubuntu. Use the 64-bit installation CD for a 64-bit-optimised installation. Recommended for visual effects Visual effects provide various special graphical effects for your desktop to make it look and feel more fun and easier to use. If your computer is not powerful enough to run visual effects, you can turn them off and will still have a usable Ubuntu desktop. Visual effects are turned on by default if you have a graphics card which is supported. For information on supported graphics cards, see DesktopEffects. 1.2 GHz x86 processor 384 MB of system memory (RAM) Supported graphics card (see DesktopEffects)
